Sixth-grade students at Chagrin Falls Intermediate School are building their engineering skills on the soccer pitch. As part of the district's commitment to STEAM learning experiences, students participated in a robot soccer challenge that brought together engineering, design, problem-solving and teamwork.
Using robotics kits, students explored the engineering design process as they worked to build robots capable of maneuvering, controlling objects and scoring goals against an opponent. Students tested their designs, identified challenges and made adjustments to improve performance, learning through experimentation and problem-solving along the way.
The activity also emphasized collaboration and strategic thinking as students worked together to develop their game strategies. The competitive challenge gave students an opportunity to put their engineering skills into practice while adapting their approaches based on their robots' performance.
The robotics equipment used for the lessons was purchased through a generous grant from the Chagrin Falls PTO. The PTO's support helps expand opportunities for students to engage in hands-on learning.
