Students working with ELA teachers, Tech Coach and School Counselor on AI habits and safety.

Sixth graders at Chagrin Falls Schools are learning more than reading and writing this year. They are also learning how to navigate the digital world thoughtfully, safely, and responsibly.

Through a series of lessons woven into English language arts classes, students are building strong digital habits that will support them in school and beyond. The focus is not just on using technology, but on understanding it.

Working with Technology Coach Molly Klodor and their ELA teachers, students explored how artificial intelligence works, what it can and cannot do, and when it is appropriate to use AI tools for school assignments. These conversations helped students see AI as a tool that requires judgment, not a shortcut.

As part of this learning, each class created a shared charter outlining expectations for responsible AI use. The charter reflects the student voice and emphasizes honesty, learning, and accountability.

Digital safety was another key part of the learning experience. In lessons led by Mrs. Schluep, CFIS Guidance Counselor, students discussed how to communicate safely online and what it means to protect their personal information. They learned to identify private information, understand circles of trust, and recognize signs that a conversation may be uncomfortable or unsafe.

Students also practiced what to do if something online does not feel right, including how to pause, seek help, and talk to a trusted adult.

Teachers emphasize that these lessons are most effective when the conversation continues beyond the classroom. Families are encouraged to talk with students at home using simple, open ended questions such as:

  • How do you know if it is okay to use AI for an assignment?

  • Who are the trusted adults you can talk to if something online makes you feel unsafe?

By combining classroom learning with family conversations, Chagrin Falls Schools aims to help students grow into confident, responsible digital citizens—ready to learn, connect, and make thoughtful choices in an increasingly online world.
