Thanks to a Chagrin Falls Middle School PTO grant, lunchtime has taken on a new dimension of excitement with the launch of "recHess" — a weekly chess tournament that combines recess with competitive strategy.
Each week, middle school students gather for friendly yet fierce matches, using PTO-funded chess sets and timers to test their skills against peers. The program has created a supportive environment where students learn new strategies from one another while building connections across grade levels.
"The energy is high" during these weekly tournaments, which have quickly become a student favorite. The PTO's investment in chess sets, timers, and prizes has transformed a simple game into one of the week's most anticipated events.
