The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) released the 2018-2019 Local Report Card for all districts today. Undoubtedly, local and statewide media will once again attempt to rank and compare school districts based upon this information. Reporting at the state level by ODE changes annually. For the second year, the ODE Local Report Card is assigning an overall district grade. As assessments change, scoring is manipulated and calculations are modified. This continues to make it extremely difficult for communities across the state to draw accurate conclusions and make valid comparisons. There are six main components on ODE’s Local Report Card, for which we are graded on five.
“These results are a reflection of a hard working staff, quality student body and supportive community. We are very proud of the work that has been done by our staff over the last three years which has resulted in a ranking of third in Ohio based on this measure,” said Superintendent Robert Hunt, Chagrin Falls Schools. “However, we remain committed to the development of the whole child and helping each student individually achieve at their highest potential.”
Below you will find the overall District grade and an overview of each component with its coinciding letter grade:
Overall Letter Grade: For the second year, the ODE has added an overall letter grade indicating a district’s overall performance across all components. The overall grade is calculated by taking a weighted percentage of each reported component. Chagrin Falls Schools is one of 31 schools in Ohio to have received an Overall Grade of “A.”
Achievement: The achievement component represents the number of students who passed state tests and how well they performed on them. Chagrin Falls Schools received a composite score of “A” which is calculated using the number of indicators met and performance index, The District increased the performance index from 103.8 (2017), 107.1 (2018) to 109.2 (2019).
Progress: The progress component is intended to reflect the growth that all students are making based on their past performance. Chagrin Falls Schools received an “A.” ODE defines an “A” as achieving greater than expected growth for students.
Gap Closing: The gap closing component shows how well schools are meeting the performance expectations for all students and subgroups. Chagrin Falls Schools received an “A.”
Graduation Rate: The graduation rate looks at the percent of students who are successfully finishing high school in four or five years. Chagrin Falls Schools received an “A.”
K-3 Literacy: The K-3 literacy component looks at how successful the school is at getting struggling readers on track to proficiency in kindergarten through grade 3. Chagrin Falls Schools received an “NR” on this component because we had fewer than five percent of our students in kindergarten reported as “not on-track” to meet the Third Grade Reading Guarantee.
Prepared for Success: The prepared for success component looks at how well prepared students are for all future opportunities. It includes college entrance exam remediation-free scores, number of Honors Diplomas awarded, Advanced Placement exam scores and College Credit Plus credit accrual. Chagrin Falls Schools received a “A.”
We believe there are multiple ways to evaluate quality in our School District. We are fortunate to have a community that supports a well-rounded education that exposes students to the arts, foreign language at the elementary level, STEM education and much more that is not captured by this report. The Chagrin Falls Board of Education Meeting on September 25, 2019 at 6 p.m. will include a presentation on the District Report Card. Interested parents/guardians and community members are welcome to attend this meeting to learn more about our progress and related work across the District.
Finally, we encourage our community to utilize the Quality Profile located at the following link: 2018 - 2019 Quality Profile
to obtain a comprehensive view of what is happening across our School District. This document is also being mailed to each resident in the coming week.
Thank you for your continued support of Chagrin Falls Schools.
