Read! It's what smart people do!

WRITE! It transforms, heals, entertains, persuades, and informs!
Words have power!  Use the force!

Goals & Objectives for the Year:
Students will follow the writing process for academic and creative writing, while further developing skills in grammar and mechanics during this full year course.  Students will focus on the parts of speech, parts of a sentence, paragraph, and essay construction.  The literary portion of this full year course will focus on novel study, short stories, poems, plays, and myths.  The students will be required to read one book of choice per semester ( per quarter for Honors English students).  The vocabulary program also extends over the year and will focus on word stems, as well as academic and novel study vocabulary.

*PLEASE SEE INFINITE CAMPUS FOR HOMEWORK & UPDATED GRADES !!!! STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO READ OR WRITE EVERY NIGHT!  200 MINUTES OF READING TIME IS THE BASELINE GOAL FOR EACH STUDENT OVER A 2 WEEK PERIOD.  QUITE OFTEN THAT NIGHTLY 20 MINUTES WILL BE FOR REQUIRED READING OR ASSIGNED WRITING TOPICS OR PROJECTS.  IF WE ARE IN BETWEEN NOVEL OR WRITING UNITS, STUDENTS ARE ASKED TO READ &/OR WRITE SOMETHING THEY ENJOY TO MEET THEIR 200 MINUTE GOAL!

* GRADES ARE PRIMARILY BASED ON ASSESSMENTS OF THE CONTENT STANDARD OR STRATEGY THAT WE HAVE BEEN STUDYING.  TYPICALLY, FRIDAYS WE WILL HAVE A SHORT ASSESSMENT OVER THE TOPICS COVERED THAT WEEK IN GRAMMAR, WRITING, READING,& VOCABULARY.  EVERY UNIT, STUDENTS WILL TAKE A PRETEST AND POST TEST TO DETERMINE GROWTH THROUGHOUT THAT UNIT.  CLASS WORK AND HOMEWORK WILL GENERALLY BE GIVEN IN AN EFFORT TO PRACTICE SKILLS, AND THE WEEKLY AND FINAL ASSESSMENTS WILL SHOW MASTERY OR NEED FOR REVIEW OF SPECIFIC SKILLS OR STANDARDS.
